AGE: Born in 1978
JOURNAL: [personal profile] lollobrigida
CURRENTLY PLAYED: Erica Reyes - Teen Wolf

CHARACTER INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Stefan Salvatore
SERIES: The Vampire Diaries (TV)
CHARACTER AGE: Chronologically 164.
REFERENCE: TVD Wikia Article about Stefan Salvatore
CANON POINT: Post 5x12 - The Devil Inside
SEXUALITY: Stefan Salvatore has been shown in canon as predominantly heterosexual. Vampirism by default does lead toward a darker avenue of intimate gestures and he has had a close bond with male vampires such as Klaus during the 20s and even while on his Ripper bender. His tolerance level for asshole behavior seems to lend to a tone of being okay with the company he keeps, regardless of their preferences.
PERSONALITY:

Stefan Salvatore is often described as broody. Throughout canon however many other descriptors have been given to him and unlike the word broody - they are far more integral to shaping who he has become. From his beginnings as a loyal and compelled boy, to his rash of violent behavior as a ripper - Stefan has shown a great deal of growth and development over the one hundred and sixty-four years he's been around.

MYSTIC FALLS - KATHERINE & HER CLAIM

Stefan was the second son of Giuseppe Salvatore and was raised to be the typical Southern Gentleman. He would serve in the war, showing his honor and loyalty to his country. He would help out with his family obligations, proving his trust in the way his father ran their household. He would remain close with his brother, showing his devotion to the bond that family gave him. For the most part, Stefan could be considered a great asset to the town and someone that would someday provide any woman with a decent husband. The arrival of Katherine Pierce into his world didn't alter those values, it only skewed them severely toward her side of things. He sought out her affection and even had a level of competition for her attention with his brother, Damon. It wasn't that he wanted to compete with his brother, but it was that Katherine seemed to make it into a contest and rather than fight against it or surrender, he tried only to show her that he was more devoted - more loyal to her. It edged on a light case of being obsessed with her, but due to the mutual attraction it isn't as overt to the casual viewer.

When he is shown the truth, he recoils against it. Seeing that she is a monster of sorts terrifies him and brings him back to his foundations in the church and all that his upbringing has taught him. Of course, he doesn't actually get a chance to remove himself from this relationship because her desires and intentions on him take priority and she compels him to "Continue as they were." This compulsion is the first betrayal that he experiences from Katherine (and will not be the last), but it sets him up for his future as a vampire as well.

The Salvatore family becomes aware of their vampire problem and Stefan's loyalty to his family paired with his determination to prove himself to Katherine gives him a moment of accidental admission to his father about the true nature of the girl he's involved with. It's that slip of information that sets up a chain of events that lead to Giuseppe killing his own sons, the burning of the church and locking of the vampires in the tomb beneath it (plus the faking of Katherine's Death/Imprisonment), and the transition from human to vampire for Stefan and his brother Damon.

The biggest thing to consider when Stefan is awoken as a new vampire is that while he has doubts about his situation, once he feeds (and kills his father) he embraces the new opportunity for power and strength. He sees this as something to excel in and he convinces his brother to join him. His need for family and to have someone to share in his experience leads both of them down a desperate path of bloodshed and compulsion.

I TURN IT OFF.

The one thing that allows Stefan to continue as a Ripper is that fact that he embraced his ability to turn off his emotions. He didn't feel any connection to his victims, only the power that he gained by killing them and feeding from them. It was a high and when he met Lexi, another vampire, she tried to help him. It took her years, but she was able to push him from his ripper ways and guide him into a much more peaceful existence with being a vampire. He shifted from human blood to animal blood and used that to keep his obsession and drive to feed and keep feeding at bay. Having human blood was something that he knew he couldn't control on his own and without someone there to help him remain focused, he resigned himself to never feeding on human blood again.

It doesn't last though, because after years of being away from his brother Stefan returns to his brother and the ways that Damon has adapted to are quite the opposite of where he began as a vampire. Rather than being afraid of what he is, Damon seems to relish in it and creates that temptation in Stefan that he had worked so hard to keep at bay. Damon opens up that floodgate with Stefan once more and undoes all the work that Lexi had put Stefan through. It shows how very weak Stefan is when it comes to that side of his vampirism and how easily he can succumb to temptation and the lack of control that goes hand in hand with that.

THE RIPPER IN ME

Stefan's journey as a vampire is a bloody one. The loyalty and determination he once had for family and success shifts to a much darker place and instead builds to an unstoppable need to be satisfied. His obsessive tendencies are increased, due to his vampire side putting all of his personality traits on high. When things with his brother fall apart due to his lack of discretion when it comes to his feeding habits, he resorts to finding new companions. He travels to Chicago and while there he places himself into a sort of self-flagellation of guilt by keeping track of the names of all of his victims. Even while dealing with that level of guilt internally, he opts to continue his showy habits and creates countless scenes that most would consider over the top.

His actions do gain him the attention of a vampire sibling duo in Klaus and Rebekah. In their friendship, though short-lived, he finds that sibling bond he's been lacking so desperately since Damon left his side. He shows off for them, making a slightly public display, but compelling a husband and wife, and by trying to create a quickly earned level of intimacy with Rebekah. Even though he's been around for a while, he still has that need to be part of a family, to have those sort of relationships that he can rely on, because he knows that deep down he's not able to cope with his habits on his own.

Unlike his brother, who tried to curb his violence, Klaus and Rebekah only encourage his behavior and it's that feeling of belonging and success that make him want to go with them instead of stay behind when things go wrong. Of course, that doesn't work out and he's compelled once again to change his plans for his life. Klaus makes him forget all he's experienced with them in Chicago and Stefan continues on his tour of guilt and murder.

It gets a second stop with Lexi, and even more of her mysterious ways of removing that temptation of human blood and re-instilling all those guidelines that she put up for him to follow. Stefan goes through more than a decade of Lexi's guidance and it allows him to once more find that balance between being a ripper and being himself.

RETURNING TO MYSTIC FALLS: AKA - I MUST KNOW HER

Despite years of bouncing around the country and living his So-Called Vampire Life, Stefan always seems to find his way back to his home. Returning to Mystic Falls has him falling into the path of Elena Gilbert and saving her life. It's from that point that his obsessive tendencies shift from blood and feeding into finding out who Elena is and why she looks exactly like Katherine. A lot of the traits that he's known for end up coming into conflict with this. His loyalty and willingness to provide for a girl he likes means he seems to open his mouth all too often in situations he has no right doing so. He tells Elena that she was adopted, which is a huge over-step for someone that a girl just met a short time ago.

It doesn't stop there, either. He's full of information that forever alters Elena's life and in general not for the best. He shoves himself into her life, creating this alluring draw of the mysterious guy that has all these great cooking skills and for the most part his intentions don't have anything negative toward her. He just wants to understand and make sure if there is something about her to worry about that she's safe.

His love for her isn't so much displaced as it is initiated by curiosity. While his love for Katherine had become tainted due to the compulsion she used on him, the feelings he develops for Elena are rooted in the experience of what he believed Katherine to be originally. The enjoyment for life is something that he feels he's missed out on during all those years of turning his emotions off and being a reckless murderer. Elena brings that balance to his life and he not only can find ways to appreciate that, but he falls in love with her.

The only thing is that him being in love with this girl brings attention to her that might have been there before, but certainly not to the high extreme danger mode that it ends up with. Stefan brings with him his brother Damon, who seems far too curious as to why he's back in Mystic Falls. Their brotherhood has always been a myriad of checks and balances and the incarnation of their relationship goes through harrowing levels of hate and acceptance over the years. From Stefan trying to reign in his brother and monitor his actions to prevent further danger from happening, to him actually guiding him on how to be a better boyfriend to Stefan's ex-girlfriend... it's easy to say that their relationship is complicated.

ME, MYSELF, AND I

One thing that is definitely hard to categorize is the thought that most of Stefan's life might have been guided by destiny. The reveal that Stefan himself is a doppelganger and that his lineage goes back to Silas, a super powerful witch, only proves to create an interesting plotline that has zero impact on who he is. Aside from the thought that Elena and Stefan - or Katherine and Stefan were destined to find each other, being the shadow of a doppelganger only proved to be a nuisance to him. It put people he loved in danger. It put him in a safe that was sunk to the bottom of the quarry and it created a desperate race to find a cure that was doomed to fail from the start. If anything, the reveal of his doppelganger status has only made Stefan step outside of his expectations, but of his own choice instead of because of something destiny shoved at him. Even when he loses his memories and has a lot less tact, he is still "Stefan" but without the hundred and forty years of guilt and weight on his shoulders.

AT HIS CORE HE IS A CARE BEAR

Stefan has had one hundred and sixty-four years to live, kill, maim, survive; to be compelled, stabbed, loved, and betrayed. All of the events in his life create a template for him to shape his future to, but he's always remained the same person. He cares far too much for those around him. His need to prove himself the best choice for them comes in all directions. With his love for Katherine or his willingness to let Lexi guide him to a cleaner vampire life - these are all the high levels of commitment he puts to these tasks, not for himself, but for the betterment of those around him. To prove that he is what they need him to be, that he can provide for them.

His willingness to tolerate his brother's behavior, Klaus and his antics, the taunting of Katherine years after he fell out of love with her are still further testaments to his loyalty to those he cares about. Behind each one of these annoyances and frustrating people is someone else that is connected to them that he cares for. Whether it's putting up with Klaus to save his brother's life or to find the affection of Rebekah - he does it. From making deals with Original vampires to talking his brother down off the ledge that he's literally putting Vicki on, he'll do it. He gives Katherine, a woman who lied, betrayed, and turned his life into the slight disaster that it is a peaceful send-off before he believes she is going to die - not because he still loves her, but because he believes that she is no worse than any of them and deserves the same amount of peace as they do.

All of his obsessive tendencies, even his lack of control, can be traced back to just how much he cares about people. It's backwards, to think that his behavior as a ripper is there because he cares, but the only way he was able to deal with the guilt and sadness when he was turned into a vampire was to turn off his ability to care. In a sense, that emotion that level of commitment and loyalty could have saved him, but by turning it off is spiraled him out of control completely.

Now, he uses his compassion and his ability to care to a good ends. He is supportive to those around him, those that he cares about. He's a rock of support for those that struggle. He helps Caroline through her transition, he shows Elena how to enjoy her final days as a human and then tries to help her through her own vampire life. (Though, there are complications out of his hands with that one.) He even cares about his brother enough to see that Elena makes him a better person and actually suggest that Damon try not to screw it up with her.

He still has struggles, still fights against those demons of his past, but he can do it with a level and clear head. He actually seems slightly "over" the drama of his own life and just wants to see where and when it'll all come to an end for him. Considering the dangers that seem to run into them on a near daily basis, I'm sure a part of him has slowly shifted toward a fatalist attitude that whatever happens, will happen and he's going to see it through to the end.

POWERS:

Vampire Enhanced Abilities:

Strength, Hearing, Smell, Speed, Healing - While these are enhanced they are also reliant on his feeding on blood. The longer he goes without, the weaker he will get.

Vampire Healing of Others:

Stefan’s blood is capable of healing others if they consume it. I’m not sure how the game/environment would like to handle the siring of more vampires if they die with his blood in their system, but his canon dictates that dying with his blood in their system will start the transition from human to vampire.

Emotional Control:

Stefan can turn his emotions off if he wants to. Because, as a vampire, his emotions are heightened, it is sometimes easier for a vampire to simply turn them off. In Canon stefan has done this a few times.

Vampire Compulsion:

All Stefan needs is to have direct eye contact with the person in order to plant a suggestion that the person will be compelled to follow through with. These compulsions can range from simply having someone walk away or do something physical to rewriting over memories. The compulsion remains behind until the subject becomes a vampire themselves (much like Damon's compulsion of Caroline) or until the actual physical act has been completed. For memories, the compulsion remains until the vampire dies. (Much like Katherine being compelled to stay in the tomb.)

WEAKNESSES:
He is shown to have a weakness to sunlight (if he doesn't have his spelled ring), to an herb called Vervain - which can burn his skin and cause his to be subdued for a long period of time if it is injected into his body. he also can be compelled by an Original vampire. He has a weakness to wood being placed beneath his skin. It is excruciating to experience and if it is placed into his heart he will petrify and die.

He's also very vulnerable to the bite of a werewolf. This acts as a toxin of sorts and will create a horrible wound that just keeps spreading. It will create a fever, followed by crazy hallucinations, manic paranoia, and a crazed state of mind until he dies.

He requires an invitation into a residence and if he's brought into a residence without the invitation when he wakes up he will not be able to breathe. The air is not his to breathe, basically.

PREVIOUS GAME MEMORIES: N/A
SUITABILITY: Stefan has been subjected to countless crazy scenarios. He's been compelled to forget periods of time and locked in a large safe for the summer continually dying over and over again. A domed environment that wants him to have sex is probably the most random thing he's been hauled into, but not the worst. With other canon mates there in the game to help with the transition, it should be easier for him to settle in with a world where he knows for a fact that things could be worse.

FIRST PERSON EXAMPLE:

[A furrowed brow greets those that are watching, eyebrows lifting as he tries to figure out how to best approach the current topic.]

As it turns out, those things they tell you when you arrive are actually pretty true. Alarming, I know, but when you're taken hostage by unknown entities trust isn't something that comes so easily. Trust really shouldn't come at all, but it seems a bit of leniency is required in these situations.

[He draws his mouth into a tight line, the internal struggle of how to deal with this waging completely.] I feel like inserting Taylor Swift lyrics into this would cheapen it, but it might actually work.

Unless some of you don't know who she is. [If Damon was here, he'd know. He was always more up to date on the current high school and college girl trends.] In that case I just threw a name into this conversation that wasn't my own, so I'll remedy that with saying that I'm Stefan Salvatore and I could use some company. [Yep, he realizes instantly how alone that sounded, but he's used to it. He actually is okay with the alone part most of the time.]

THIRD PERSON EXAMPLE:

It isn't that he doesn't care. He does. Sometimes he probably cares too much, but for the most part he's just exhausted. Everything feels too random, too chaotic and even when things settle down it's like waiting for the next grenade to go off and blow the front room of the Boarding House to pieces. Not literally - there are things he likes in that room. It's just if he was to look back on the life he's had since returning to Mystic Falls he's not sure what's left to salvage.

He's learned too much about himself, about the people around him, and most of it isn't something that is easily forgettable. He's done things that aren't easy to look back on and it's the fact that he still looks back that doesn't unsettle him as much as it is that he wonders at what point will it be another thing that's just part of his history. Part of the Stefan Salvatore diaries. He hasn't written in one in months, but maybe he should start up again.

The humming noise of the room suddenly floods back into his focus. The fact that he's at a party and contemplating whether or not to start up his journaling again is probably a sign that he's too old for this. The Lockwood Estate, once more being dressed up and given some excuse for celebration, isn't a place he thought he'd spend a lot of time at. Hearing his name being called through the crowd he looks for the source and nods at someone from the football team. He can't remember their name, but he knows that after attending high school sixteen times that forgetting names is bound to happen. A friendly lift of his head and a half smile give the mostly drunk guy the acknowledgment he's seeking and it allow Stefan to return to his quieter thoughts.

He should have left town sooner. Lexi had been right. There's nothing really left for him here and with Katherine dead and Elena showing some modicum of strength when it comes to making her own choices, he wonders if he's better off finally taking that road trip to anywhere. Maybe tomorrow he'll just start up his motorcycle and head out onto the road and just see where it takes him.

Maybe.

Maybe he'll just finish this drink and head back to the Boarding House and find something that he has only read twenty times before. Stefan's not sure why, but he feels like he should take the chance to have a slow moment just for a night. Things in this town don't seem to slow down for very long and if there's something waiting around the corner, he'd at least like to get a head start in the morning.
